Residents of Solai ward in Rongai can now breathe a sigh of relief following sinking of 11 boreholes in the area by World Vision Kenya in conjunction with the county government of Nakuru.
The project was initiated following a survey conducted by the African Development Bank following acute water shortage.
Emaragishu water project that has the capacity of 75 cubic metres per hour was the last to be commissioned on Wednesday in a ceremony attended by Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui and water administrative secretary Winnie Guchu.
Its has the capacity to serve at least 28,000 people in the area.
Canary Njehia, an engineer with World Vision, said that before World Vision intervened, access to water stood at 30% and now stands at 54%.
He said that their decision to use solar systems was informed by the fact that solar energy is reliable thus sustainability of the project.
The engineer said that once full piping is done, the water will go a long way in ensuring that locals benefit from clean water.
Governor Kinyanjui said that among his government’s blue prints was water provision.
He said that in Solai ward his government will use Sh7 million to do water piping to individual homes and community water points.
"With affordable water in the area it will be possible to sustain children in school given that most children in Solai skip classes to fetch water," he said..
Guchu pledged that the national government will partner with development partners and the county government to ensure locals get clean and affordable water.
