The African Development Bank will put up a water project in Ugunja, Siaya County to a tune of Sh800 million.

Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi says the water project, which will kick off in August this year, is expected to end the perennial water problems across the constituency.

The legislator revealed that they have been able to secure the funds through concerted efforts and engagement with key stakeholders in the water sector, stating that the project will kick off as soon as they finalize preparations which are currently underway.

Wandayi who is also the Chairman of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee disclosed that through that water will be pumped from River Nzoia to reservoirs at Madungu and Ugunja town where it shall be treated and supplied to serve the entire constituency.

He said that the project will be supplemented by the county government of Siaya and therefore stated that there should be no cause for alarm that the project might fail.

Wandayi made the remarks in his Ugunja constituency where Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga lauded the move but warned him to ensure they closely monitor the project when it shall have begun to ensure that it is done to the required standards.

Rasanga stated that if not closely monitored the project might be done shoddily, citing the multi-billion Siaya-Bondo water project which he says was shoddily done hence the perennial water problems in Bondo.

The governor lamented that the Siaya-Bondo water project was done with substandard pipes which have burst at least 16 times hence the perennial water problem in Bondo sub-county.
