It will take Africa a little longer to realise what it agitated for during the fight for independence, Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has said.

Joho said natives of the African continent spend much time fighting each other instead of fighting for freedom.

He made the statement in reference to the death of former Cuban President Fidel Castro who played an instrumental role in the liberation of Cuba.

Castro, a Cuban revolutionary leader who built a communist state on the doorstep of the United States and for five decades defied US efforts to topple him, died on Friday at the age of 90.

He was demonised by the United States and its allies but admired by many leftists around the world, especially socialist revolutionaries in Latin America and Africa.

He transformed Cuba from a playground for rich Americans into a symbol of resistance to Washington.

"When revolutionary movements in Africa fought for their independence, the goal then was freedom from hunger, ignorance and disease," Joho said in a Facebook post on Saturday.

"Generations later we fight this battle but in many cases against ourselves. Fidel Castro played an important role in various liberation movements and revolutions in Africa. Notably in the fall of apartheid and the Cold War. For this, he will be remembered. Africa for sure will miss this great man. Viva Fidel, Viva Africa!"
