Former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko has bid his staff farewell following his nomination to the Cabinet by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Tobiko, who had served for six years before his nomination, said he had left behind highly and able staff, assuring the public there would be no vacuum in the office.

During a farewell party on Wednesday, Tobiko announced that Public Prosecutions Secretary Dorcas Odour will take charge at the ODPP in an acting capacity before his successor is appointed.

While highlighting some of his achievements, he said that in the six years he had been the DPP, the office has grown from a mere 93 prosecution counsel to the present 627.

"Similarly, the number of non-legal staff has grown from the initial 112 at inception to the current 402," he said.

Tobiko noted that before 2011, over 95 per cent of prosecutions in the subordinate courts were handled by 305 police prosecutors but all they were all phased out and replaced with prosecution counsel.

"Effectively, therefore, prosecution service in Kenya has been fully professionalised and civilianised," the former DPP said.Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in your county that you want Hivisasa to cover?
