In a statement on Saturday, the Attorney General said the legality of the registration of the Atheists Society will be determined by the Supreme Court.

"The suspension should be done until the propriety, legality and constitutionality of the registration is determined by the supreme court," read the statement.

The suspension follows complaints by religious leaders who had threatened to mobilise their faithful to demand de-registration of the organisation.

Kenya National Congress of Pentecostal Churches and Ministries chairman Stephen Ndicho and former MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru on Friday called for the resignation of the Attorney General Githu Muigai for registering the society.

Muslims’ Shuura Council chairperson Abdullahi Abdi faulted the registration of the society saying that it not only goes against the constitution of Kenya but also mocks Kenya’s cultural and social norms.

But in a swift rejoinder the Atheists Society said they had not been served with the notice by the Attorney General office.

“We have not received any formal commutation from the Attorney General regarding the suspension of our registration,” said Harrison Mumia, association's president.
