Aga Khan Hospital through their initiatives have pledged to put more efforts in ensuring that breast cancer is eradicated at early stages before causing disaster.
According to one of the pathologist Dr. Shahin Sayed who represented the Aga Khan during the one day free breast cancer screening function which got underway on Monday, the hospital is committed to wipe away life threatening diseases like cancer in partnership with local NGOs plus other hospitals.
Dr. Sayed encouraged youths (both men and women) to go for prostate and breast cancer testing respectively noting that the disease is becoming rampant not only in Kenya, but everywhere in the world.
She was impressed by the response from those who attended the exercise saying that there was need for intensive sensitisation in our society to have more people going for screening and get subsequent medication.
The event which was organised by Healthcare Rescue Centre saw more than 400 people go for screening from various sub-counties within Kisii County.
This is part of the several health project which has been organised and carried out by the Aga Khan Hospital Foundation in partnership with other local NGOs, the recent one being the eye problem screening initiative which saw a free eye camp in the county where residents benefited from the project.
Meanwhile, director for Health Care Rescue Centre in partnership with Aga Khan Hospital Roselyn Nyakona challenged men from Kisii County to go for breast cancer diagnosis and kill the misconception that the disease is for women.
Speaking during the breast cancer screening exercise which was held at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital on Monday, Nyakona said that the initiative is meant to create awareness among the society about the danger associated with the disease.
"Men should come for screening and avoid that old mindset that cancer is for women. Cancer is killing both genders so men should not be deceived by that mind set,” advised Nyakona.
She disclosed that they have plans to visit every county to carry out this free initiative and disseminate information about the significance of self-screen which she said is very crucial to every individual saying that such exercise gives the doctor easy time when doing their diagnosis.
