KNCCI Mombasa County Chair lady Rukiya Rashid said on Saturday the trend is so worrying that majority of Muslim children in the devolved unit may end up being raised by single parents.

She said Khadi Courts have a huge responsibility in saving the family unit that is slowly crumbling.

"Khadi Courts should help people save the family unit from breaking," she said as she addressed journalists in Old Town.

"The number of families seperating are on the rise and there is need for stakeholders to intervene before it is too late."

She said her own analysis during her various tours across the county indicate the number of Muslim street children in the town has shot up.

Khadi Court's main responsibilities are to provide advisory and mediation services to Muslim couples in marital disputes as well as officiate the registration of marriages between and among Muslims.

Other roles include adjudicating over divorce proceedings, issuance of divorce certificates and dissolving Muslim estates.

"All of us should be concerned because without a strong family unit, even the country's stability economically, socially and politically will be at stake.
