Huruma Member of County Assembly in Uasin Gishu Peter Chomba has claimed that some elderly persons from the Agikuyu community are being discriminated against in the ongoing registration for the beneficiaries of the national government's cash transfer program.
The vocal MCA claims despite the elderly aged over 70 years being registered in the program they have never received the funds.
“It’s sad that many elderly people from the Kikuyu community are complaining that the chiefs have been writing their names and when the funds are given their names are usually missing,” said the Huruma MCA in Eldoret town, Wednesday.
The vocal MCA wondered if the Kikuyus in the county are lesser residents and questioned the criteria usually used while giving out the funds.
“Chiefs while taking names should not discriminate people based on their tribes and political affiliation since its public funds meant for people who have qualified. The funds should be given to everyone regardless his ethnic or political affiliation,” added Chomba.
The MCA blamed the county's Department of Social Services for laxity while registering the elderly noting that many people are complaining about their services.
