Agriculture CS Willy Bett has advised Kenyans not to pay more than Sh115 for a 2kg packet of maize flour.
Bett says that it the highest figure retailers’ should be selling the commodity, and paying more than that is exploitation.
According to Bett, Kenyans have been hoping for maize from Galana Kulalu to come to their rescue, but so far the project has not been of help.
“Millers are also becoming businessmen. With profits loaded in, the price of flour should not exceed the Sh115 per packet,” he said.
Water CS Eugene Wamalwa, who was also present during the briefing on the progress Kulalu has made since it initiated, they have made steps in ensuring the commodity is affordable.
“We have a sample that we have shown that can be produced at Sh75. Now we are going int the production phase and we are going to invite the private sector to come on board to do the production for us,” said Wamalwa.
However, Bett was noncommittal on when maize meal from the Sh7.3 billion project would be produced and availed on retail shops.
He insisted that they look forward to the day the National Irrigation Board will hand over the project to the Agricultural Development Cooperation.
