The Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Mwangi Kiunjuri has challenged farmers to construct dams and reservoirs to collect water during the rainy season.
Kiunjuri said this will help in irrigating crops during dry season and will also address the issue of water shortage."I want to urge farmers from this region to develop a culture of harvesting rain water which will be used for irrigation instead of letting all of it run off to waste. Let us remove our mindset from always depending on rain before planting but instead embrace irrigation," said the CS in Eldoret town, Saturday."This will ensure that the country is food secure and no body will die due to hunger because we will have food supply throughout the year. I call upon farmers to start constructing dams to benefit from this rainy season," he added. He, further called upon farmers to join cooperatives for them to be supplied with farm inputs in the government's subsidised program."As a government we want to ensure that all farmers are registered in cooperatives because it will be easier to deal with farmers in cooperatives rather than an individual. This will help to eradicate cartels who have been exploiting farmers," noted Kiunjuri.
