Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Principal Secretary Prof Fred Sigor has dismissed fears that the country could face a food shortage.
The PS says the country has enough food adding that the government has put in place measures that will cushion the country against food shortage.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at Eldoret town, Sigor said the government has set aside enough money to buy maize and other foodstuff in a bid to avert any shortages.
The Agriculture PS asked Kenyans not to worry over food insecurity saying that the government has taken appropriate measures.
The PS dismissed reports that the country is likely to face food shortage. He said that most parts of the country received sufficient rainfall adding that they expect a bumper harvest.
“Most parts of the country received good rains and we expect farmers will get good harvests,” he said.
The assurance comes after stakeholders warned that Uasin Gishu County could register a reduced maize harvest this season.
On Monday, Uasin Gishu County Agriculture Director Mr Joseph Cheboi said the county is likely to experience poor maize harvests this season due to insufficient rains and the Maize lethal Necrosis Disease (MLND).
He said that the amounts of rainfall experienced in the month of June and July had been minimal predicting that most crops will register low yields.
Cheboi said that they expected to harvest over 4.5 million bags of maize this season but the target might not be reached.
