The Kisii county's department of veterinary services has launched a crack down on agrovets operating without licenses.
Reports have emerged that majority of outlets within Kisii town selling animal products and livestock medicines have not been authorised by the Kenya Veterinary Board, which is a body with legal mandate to approve any animal related products selling centres within the country.
Speaking in his office on Tuesday, Kisii County veterinary services department director Dr Benard Moenga issued a stern warning against those engaging in illegal businesses.
He confirmed that the agrovet owners have assumed the duty of the livestock officers in the county and have been offering un-professional advice to livestock keepers with little knowledge in the field.
"Majority of their clients, who are mostly poor farmer are not aware of agrovet owner's competence and our livestock keeper have over relied on these people but now we will catch up with them," Moenga warned.
He promised to ensure that all is well in livestock keeping and advised farmers to seek advise from professionals instead of resorting to quacks.
