Nyachae, who served in various capacities in Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel Moi and Mwai Kibaki regimes, had complained of chest pains in April before being declared out of danger in Nairobi Hospital.

But the 86-years-old politician is said to have been condemned to ICU after brief recovery in his London home.

"He has been doing well in April and part of May and actually took most time at his London house. The pain had immensely reduced," said the source who sought anonymity.

Further, the source said: "But early this month, the pains also recurred and has since been condemned to ICU. We hope for the best."

However, efforts to get clarification from a family members hit a snug when his elder son Charles Nyachae failed to respond to phone calls.

In 2002, Nyachae run for presidential elections and finished third behind President Uhuru Kenyatta and eventual winner Mwai Kibaki.

Five years later, the powerful minister would exit politics after losing his Nyaribari Chache seat to little known Robert Monda.
