Malindi in Kilifi county is among constituencies that have greatly been affected by the ongoing heavy rains.

On Sunday, Jumwa issued the below statement about the situation:

"Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen,

In the past couple of days, I have been very sad to see thousands of Malindians in Ganda, Kakuyuni and Jilore Wards suffering from devastating floods caused by the heavy torrential rains and broken dams in upcountry, breaking the banks of River Galana/Sabaki.

Consequently, one person was reported dead in Kadzitsoni area of Ganda Ward, a great number of people have lost their homes, crops and livestock.

Bridges, roads and schools were also damaged. Businesses and normal life of the gallant citizens of Malindi have been interrupted. As the flooding waters are yet to subsidize, the suffering of of the people still lingers and many people are waiting in campsites and various rescue points in desperate situation for urgent aid and relief.

As the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed. I wish to thank the County Govt of Kilifi, the Kenya Red Cross(Malindi Branch) and other esteemed stakeholders for their urgent intervention and continued support towards mitigating the disaster and provision of humanitarian aid.

Also, as a leader I have personally donated Ksh. 100,000 through Kilifi County Opinion Diary in conjunction with Kilifi County Disaster Management Unit and Red Cross to purchase food and non-food items in aid of the affected families.

Again, I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family. I take this opportunity to also honor and sympathise with our flood-stricken brothers and sisters in Malindi and beyond.

I hope that the affected families and friends will overcome the difficulties caused by the floods and other natural disasters as I appeal for more humanitarian aid.

Thank you!"
