Kisii University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Akama has disowned students who went on rampage on Friday morning.
Mr Akama said that he only read about the strike on social media that students of the university were on strike.
"I did not know about the strike and I only read about it on social media sites that some students claiming to be students were on strike," he said.
He said that Kisii university was not the only public tertiary institution in the town and it was not automatic that those who went on strike were students.
"People should stop using the name of Kisii University since it is the only public learning institution based in Kisii region," he said.
He warned traders within Kisii town to be careful next time because the students may take advantage to steal from them.
Akama noted that unnecessary protests are meant to destroy property and cause mayhem in town and should not be allowed to take place in the future.
The professor expressed confidence that the government through the ministry of education will do something urgently to end the ongoing lecturers strike.
