Akama speaking on Tuesday during the World Environment Day at Kenyenya sub county in Kisii County said residents should plant more trees and be part of those conserving the environment.

“My plea to Kisii residents is that we should plant trees that are friendly to the environment. Trees act as water catchment areas and therefore, necessary to plant more trees to bring more rains,” he said.

He said residents should stop cutting down trees unnecessary and adhere to the government set rules.

“The government banned cutting of trees, charcoal burning and residents should adhere to that to avoid being on the wrong side of the law. Let us all put more efforts to conserve the environment,” he added.

He sai that Kisii University will partner with other stakeholders to plant trees yearly to increase the forest cover.

Akama called on Environment Cs Keriako Tobiko to traverse across the country and ensure public forums are held to sensitize Kenyans on the need to plant more trees and conserve the environment.

According to the professor, Kisii County is among the regions that leaders should educate locals on the importance of planting trees.
