A Member of the County Assembly in Nakuru County has appealed to members of the Akorino sect not to subject their children to poor conditions by resisting conventional medication.
Ndundori Ward MCA Stephen Kihara says that many children were undergoing many health related problems including diseases because their parents are against formal medication.
Speaking at the Ndundori Health Centre on Thursday during a community health sensitisation workshop, Kihara attributed the reluctance to religious beliefs.
He discouraged the attitudes mostly by members of the Akorino religious sect and urged them to stop subjecting their children to unhealthy conditions.
He said: “Some of us deliberately subject our children to unhealthy conditions because of our religious beliefs. Some children suffer from many preventable health conditions which is not right.”
Kihara added that members of the sect also fail to practice family planning, a fact that was contributing to poverty and malnutrition.
The MCA suggested that the county government should come up with a sustainable programme to sensitise communities against practices that result in negative effects socially and economically.
