An al-Shabaab returnee has been found dead along the Mombasa-Malindi highway.
The body of Abdulkarim Mzee, who is said to have surrendered to police, was found dumped along the highway on Tuesday.
Witnesses say the deceased was suffocated using a plastic bag by unknown people, a few days before he was dumped at the highway.
Reports indicate that Mzee was among seven Kenyans who had sought State protection after defecting from the terror group.
The returnees had been interrogated by various security agencies in the nation including the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and ATPU before being assured of protection.
Mzee had surrendered alongside Swaleh Ramadhan, Kayuni Khamisi and Farah Abdi following the release of their names by DCI Ndegwa Muhoro.
However, Malindi police boss Matawa Mchangi said police will only issue a statement after conducting investigations into the incident.
Muslims for Human Rights field officer Fahad Changi has urged the government to expedite investigations into the incident.
"We will hold the government accountable for failure to protect Abdul who had voluntarily surrendered to the authority. The regional coordinator Nelson Marwa should bring to book those responsible," said Changi, as quoted by The Star.
Changi is said to have accompanied the deceased to the regional coordinator’s office when he surrendered himself.
