Boni Enclave Campaign director Joseph Kanyiri has appealed to returnees who had been recruited to join al-Shabaab to surrender and register themselves at security offices.Kanyiri said his office was aware that some young men and women had secretly returned to the country. The director said the amnesty period which was announced by the national government was still open urging the returnees to surrender and register themselves at the various government offices so that rehabilitation measures and procedures can be initiated. He, however, warned those who will not present themselves voluntarily to the security agencies will be hunted down and treated like terrorists.“Al-Shabaab returnees must surrender to the authorities. If they won’t do so there will be no other option than to hunt them down and deal with them like we would terrorists,” said Kanyiri.Kanyiri also asked families of all returnees to surrender them to the authorities for amnesty and subsequent rehabilitation so that they become fully integrated back into the society, warning it is a crime to withhold information concerning such persons and hiding them.“The locals and parents of the returnee should desist from hiding them. They should cooperate with security agencies to ensure the returnees are helped to resume their normal lives instead of waiting till the security agencies flush them out,” he added.
