Health officials have revealed that the number of people diagnosed with cancer in Kisii County was on the increase.

Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Enock Ondari said that cancer is becoming a threat as new cases were being reported on a weekly basis.

Dr Ondari said a minimum of 10 new cases were being reported weekly, where majority were on advanced stages forcing them to refer the patients to Kenyatta National hospital (KNH).

Dr Ondari said oesophagus, cervix, breast and prostate were the most common types of cancers that have been referred to KNH.

“We are rooting for early diagnosis and that is only possible with routine check-up. For radiography and other advanced forms of cancer treatment, patients are referred to Nairobi,” he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.

“We use ultra sound, mammogram, X-ray, CT scanners, MRI and other machines for screening and diagnosis. They have been of great help to the hospital and residents,” added Dr Ondari.

The CEO called on the government to stakeholders for quick intervention and also urged the residents to embrace early screening to avert further crisis.
