Ruiru sub-county Deputy County Commissioner Mercy Gatobu has condemned the Wines and Spirits retailers for what she termed as increased consumption of the alcoholic drinks among the residents.
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Ruiru Stadium, Madam Gatobu said most of the wines and spirits shops open as early as 7am in the morning.
She added that most of the operators are not licensed and neither do they meet the health standards and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) requirements.
The area has been without a sub-county administrator until Tuesday when the Governor William Kabogo sent one to represent him as well as being introduced to the Ruiru public.
Mohammed Abdi, the new Sub-county administrator, vowed to work hand in hand with the area residents to fight crime and drug abuse in the area.
He added that he will soon be meeting the Nyumba Kumi initiative leaders to come up with measures to beef up security as we are approaching the festive season.
Biashara ward MCA Joe Mutuga, who was also in the same meeting warned teachers who are allegedly being accused of recruiting students into devil worshipping.
He also cautioned the area nominated members of both parliament and county assembly against inciting residents against development projects. He added that the leaders are going round ‘selling’ their petty politics to the public so as they may demonstrate against their elected leaders.
Mutuga launched the bursary fund for the unable students recently in the ward and insists the application forms are still available in his office located in Ruiru town.
Human Rights Activist John Waweru expressed his concerns over the increased cases of women battling and child abuse recommending the county government to set up a FIDA office to overlook on matters on women only.
He however commended the area OCPD Isaack Thuranira citing the reduced crime cases in the sub-county.
