A section of Jubilee lawmakers from the North Rift region have strongly defended Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter, following his arrest on Friday last week.
Keter was arrested over fake documents that he allegedly intended to use, to redeem Treasury Bills alongside two directors of Desai Industries - Arthur Sakwa and Madat Chatur.
The MP, however, dismissed claims that he forged the documents to steal Sh633 million from the Central Bank. He instead said it was government's plot detain him after he planned to reveal government's plot to steal the money.
The North Rift lawmakers, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta's political advisor, Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny said they read malice in Keter's arrest.
Speaking at the Muthaiga police station where Keter and the two were being held on Saturday, Kutuny wondered why Keter had not been booked or recorded a statement.
“What surprises most is that up to now, he has not been booked on any occurrence book, there are no allegations levelled against him, he has not recorded any statement so these are the issues of concern. How do you cash Sh633 million in treasury bills at a counter? You need trucks to carry the money,” said the Jubilee MP.
On his part, Moiben MP Silas Tiren who is Keter's close ally indicated that there was communication between Keter and the CBK Governor Peter Njoroge and that Desai Industries had sought Keter's help to redeem the T-Bills after CBK failed to respond to their letter.
“What Alfred has been doing is just to follow up because these people (Desai Industries) complained to him and asked him to table the matter before the floor of the house but as a very prudent person and somebody with a lot of civilities, he felt that he must understand the background and also be faced with full information before making any move," added Keter’s Lawyer Kimutai Bosek.
The lawyer further indicated Keter would be arraigned in court on Monday, February 19.
