Vocal Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfre Keter has waded into the ongoing debate following the unearthing of a Sh1.9 billion National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) scam.
Speaking during an interview at Citizen TV on Thursday, Keter appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to swiftly take action on the maize scandal which has caused sufferings to the farmers.
"We need the President to intervene in this matter. This issue has been in the public domain for almost 6 months but very few people have shown concern to the farmers," said Keter.
The Jubilee MP further urged the President to come out strong and give hopes to the already depressed farmers following delays in the release of funds for the maize they delivered to the NCPB.
Similar sentiments were shared by the Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) director Kipkorir Menjo who called for urgent action to be taken on the current maize scandal.
"Most of the farmers are totally disrupted, they cannot meet their financial obligations," Menjo said.
"This is not the first maize scandal we have had. What is critical here is that this country is sick and we will not have a country in the future with this kind of happenings," added Edward Kisangani, a political commentator.
The scandal which has robbed Kenya taxpayers’ Sh1.9 billion has been linked with top senior corrupt government officials.
However, Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe on Thursday dismissed reports that politicians and other senior government officials are involved in the scandal.
