Energy cabinet secretary David Chirchir has said that the government is committed to ensuring all schools have electricity by April next year.
Chirchir said the government has already installed electricity in 11,065 schools countrywide, to pave way for the implementation of the laptop project, with the few remaining in the pipeline.
The cabinet secretary was speaking at the Olkaria Geothermal Power plant during the launch of Olkaria IV, where he said that the government intended to ensure that schools were connected either by solar or the normal grid to electricity.
“We want to pledge our commitment to having all schools fitted to the normal power supply. This will create a conducive environment for our pupils,” said Chirchir. He added that many investors had refrained from investing in Kenya due to the high cost of power but were now changing tune.
“We are already receiving calls from investors who want to create industrial parks at Olkaria Power plant, this will directly ensure that even the goods produced from the parks become cheap and affordable,” he added.
The launching of the Olkaria Power plant has made the country rank eighth in geothermal production in the world.
