The final touches are being done on Bukhungu Stadium as Kakamega County seeks to host the upcoming Cecafa Senior Challenge, starting from November 26th to December 9.
Robert Sumbi, Kakamega CEC in charge of youth, sports and social services is upbeat. Phase one of the refurbished stadium will be completed before November 26th.
The Bukhungu Stadium’s capacity to host international events is bound to boost the county’s economy.
Phase one of the new Bukhungu Stadium, includes the main dais, the main stand, changing rooms, doctors’ rooms, VIP Lounges, VIP toilets, referee rooms, offices and a hotel. The project costs Sh399 million.
Kakamega Governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, hosted Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa and Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye who toured the facility to inspect the progress of the stadium earlier this month.
The duo was among other football experts who were on a fact-finding mission on the status of the stadium as they seek to host some of the Cecafa matches there.
Twelve teams have confirmed participation in the Cecafa Senior Challenge including hosts Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, and Zanzibar. Zimbabwe and Tunisia have been invited as guests following the opting out of Eritrea and Djibouti.
The total project cost will come to a tune of Sh1 billion.
