Kisumu County women MCAs have called upon the county government to allocate resources to purchase sanitary towels for school going girls.
Speaking on Thursday at Kisumu Social Hall, during a woman empowerment forum, Kisumu County nominated MCA Caroline Ogot said this will help to reduce the county's girls school absenteeism.
Ogot noted that young girls who are on their early teens miss class when they start menstruating due to lack of information on the stage they are in.
“Some are aware of the biological changes in their body but they cannot afford sanitary towels. There is need for the government to support girl child by providing her with sanitary towels,” said Ogot.
She added that will help to keep girl child in a class hence maximising her chances to excel in academics.
She noted that lack of sanitary towels to school going girls has made them to perform poorly in class.
“If we want to boost girl child education we must support them,” said Ogot.
Her counterpart Lydia Odhiambo noted that sanitary pads should be distributed to every school and every girl who has reached puberty.
According to Odhiambo provision of sanitary towels will reduce absenteeism, concentration in class translating to better results.
