Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago has urged the National Government to allocate Sh 20 billion to cater for the country’s food security.
Mandago said that governors from North Rift region have already presented a joint proposal to the national Government asking it to support maize farming.
"In our proposal, we want Sh 5 billion which will go to the purchase of maize among some other allocations which includes the subsidised fertilisers and also seeds," Mandago said.
Mandago, who was accompanied by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, was speaking at St Catherine's Girls School.
He said that the National Government has already ordered the NCPB to immediately resume buying of maize from the farmers due to the protests recently witnessed by the farmers.
"Maize farming is the backbone of food security in this country and it is due to this that we want the national government to ensure that it allocates more money for this sector," he said.
Mr Moi said that all the leaders should come together and fight for a common cause.
"Leaders in the Rift Valley should come together and fight for the farmers who have continued to be neglected and yet they are the ones providing this country with food. We should all unite and bring the interests of the farmers and also of the people we represent first," he said.
