An American national was on Monday arraigned before a Mombasa Court facing charges of illegal possession of firearms.
Mr Richard Clyde Roller was being charged alongside his Kenyan wife Ms Mercy Shirley Mwendwa.
The two were being charged with being in possession of firearms without legal documents following their arrest on Saturday.
Prosecutor Sarah Ogweno told the court that the two accused persons were found with two guns when they were arrested at their home in Nyali, Mombasa.
The accused however denied the charges before the court and filed an application to be released on a reasonable bail term.
Prosecutor Ogweno however opposed the bail application saying the American was likely to leave the court’s jurisdiction if freed.
Prosecutor Ogweno said, “If the accused is granted bail, he should report to the CID offices in Mombasa and also report to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.”
Mombasa Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi in her ruling ordered for the two to be released on a Sh500,000 bond with a similar surety.
Magistrate Shitubi directed Mr Roller to deposit his passport with the court and report to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) once a month.
