Area residents blocked the road for hours to protest the incident, forcing drivers heading to Nairobi to look for alternative routes.

The angry residents demanded that Kiambu Governor William Kabogo comes and clearly states when the footbridge at Witeithie will be constructed.

Juja OCPD Patricia Nasio and her other security officers tried to intervene but the unruly mob stood their ground and refused to clear off the highway.

At around mid-day, police were compelled to lob tear gas canisters to disperse surging crowds that milled at the scene.

Juja MP Francis Munyua, who arrived at the scene, blamed Finance CS Henry Rotich for the delayed release of Sh10 million set aside for the footbridge saying this is giving President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration a bad name.

"The government has already set aside Sh10 million to erect footbridges at Witeithie and Gwa-Kairo but CS Rotich has delayed to release the funds. He is the cause of this accidents," said Munyua.

The angry residents had vowed to continue blocking the road until the President addresses their plight.

MP Waititu asked the residents to be patient until the government puts up the bridge, promising it will be erected soon.
