Business along the Mombasa-Lunga Lunga highway was over the weekend paralysed after residents held a demonstration after four primary school students died in a road accident
The hundreds of angry residents vowed to block the road until their demand to have road bumps erected on the road was met in order to curb road accidents in the area.
The residents said lack of bumps at the blackspot has contributed to the increase in road accidents in the area.
Seven people, including four pupils died when a matatu ferrying the pupils from a trip in Shimoni caves to Kisauni collided with a lorry.
One of the residents, Said Mohamed said the county government should erect road bumps because many residents, especially school children continue to die.
“We are very angry by the rate of accidents in this area. We have lost many lives due to speeding motorists. Many people have been knocked and killed along the stretch by hit and run motorists,” said Mohamed.
It took the intervention of Lunga Lunga Sub County Administrator Edward Chibu to calm the angry residents who promised to erect bumps in the area.
“I urge motorists to observe caution when approaching this section. Motorists should observe traffic rules for accidents to reduce,” he said.
Shimoni Police Station boss (OCS) Abdullah Tato who confirmed the incident said the accident happened when the matatu collided with a lorry.
