The residents from Maraigushu village, accompanied by the area MP John Kihagi, blamed police officers for being incited by one politician in the area to arrange the arrest.

"We suspect a nominated Senator is behind this and we cannot allow him to mistreat  an innocent officer  just because he disagreed with him," one of the residents said during the storming.

Sunday night, the sub-chief, Peter Irungu,  said nominated senator Paul Njoroge accused him of being behind selling of bhang in the area and even stage-managing his arrest.

Naivasha sub-county commissioner Isaac Masinde had to intervene to cool tempers before ordering that the arrested government officer be released on free bond.

Addressing the residents, Masinde said  an inquiry file had been opened following the allegation that the sub-chief was found in possession of the drug.

“The sub-chief has been released on a free bond and an inquiry file has been opened so that the case can be fully investigated,” Mr Masinde said.
