Thika West Sub County Deputy Commissioner Tom Anjere has urged locals who have not picked their national Identification Cards (IDs) from various chiefs offices in the area to pick them and register as voters.
The DCC reveals that there are over 50, 000 uncollected IDs within Thika region.
Speaking at Thika Huduma Centre on Wednesday, the DCC said that eligible locals have every right to register as voters and participate in elections.
Anjere said that the issuance of IDs to new applicants is being fastened to ensure that they are not locked out of the voter listing exercise.
“We want to ask those who applied for IDs to make sure they pick them from their respective chiefs offices to be able to register as voters within the remaining time,” he said.
Anjere also asked public and private hospitals that could be in possession of locals IDs to surrender them to owners.
He said that there have been complaints from a section of locals that they can’t register because their IDs are withheld by hospitals and bar outlets over unpaid bills.
Anjere said that security will be tightened in the area as the voter listing exercise continues.
Last week President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered all county commissioners, administrators and chiefs to make sure that IDs are issued to eligible locals for them to register in the ongoing voter registration exercise that ends on February 14 next month.
