Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has warned politicians against interfering with the operations of IEBC ahead of repeat presidential election due next month.

Speaking to the press in Nairobi, party leader Joseph Munyao attacked NASA for blackmailing the electoral body, asking the Opposition alliance to let the Wafula Chebukati-led team discharge its mandate without interference.

"We condemn NASA and some civil society groups for their attempts to coerce the IEBC to conduct its business under duress as it prepares for the October 17 election," Munyao said.

The DP boss added: "We urge the electoral commission to remain independent and united in order to deliver free, fair and credible poll."

Munyao also called on politicians across both the political divides to reign on their supporters to maintain peace in their campaigns.

"Let Kenyans make the decision in peace without intimidation and threats," he added.

He was accompanied by party officials among them; DP chairman Esau Kioni and Secretary General Jacob Haji.

Munyao's remarks comes a day after Jubilee Deputy party leader and Deputy President William Ruto told NASA to let IEBC conduct its affairs as stipulated in the Constitution.

"No one should dictate which staff should conduct elections or how it should be done. IEBC is an independent body, which knows its mandate. Issues of management of the election are a preserve of the commission. No one should dictate what should be done or who should do it," the DP warned, as quoted by the Standard.

The Opposition has called for the sacking of commission's top officials over the bungled August 8 election.
