The ODM Party in Mombasa was dealt a blow on Wednesday after one of the leaders in the county decamped to Jubilee.
Shimanzi-Ganjoni Ward MCA Nassir Rashid announced he had ditched the Raila Odinga-led party and vowed to support Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s rival Suleiman Shahbal in the county’s gubernatorial race. The MCA, who lost during the ODM nominations, claimed that he lost unfairly during the primaries, adding that he could not continue supporting the party.Rashid accused Joho’s administration of letting down residents, arguing that the county is known for its poor service delivery despite receiving a huge budget from the national government. The MCA further vowed to support Rashid Hussein Omar who is the Jubilee Party candidate for the Shimanzi-Ganjoni ward during the August 8 polls. On his part, Shahbal who termed the MCA's move as a game-changer in Mombasa politics said “it has become clear that ODM's influence in the county politics is slowly fading”.
