Kiambu anti-drugs crusader Gladys Chania has raised fears of the return of killer brews in some parts of the county.

Chania alleges that some unscrupulous people have allegedly started making and selling the outlawed brew and liquor.

Speaking to journalists in Limuru Town on Sunday, the anti-drugs campaigner asked the police to intensify crackdown on sellers of illegal brews.

She said that laxity in the fight against the brews has given it chance to resurface.The anti-drug campaigner cited Limuru,  Ruiru, Kiambu, Githunguri and Thika as areas where the illicit brew is on sale.

"The war against illicit brew and liquor must be taken a notch higher to save young people who are the target," Chania said.

The anti-drugs crusader who unsuccessfully contested for the Kiambu women Rep seat in last year’s polls appealed to politicians to support the war on illicit brews. 

She said that silence from the political class has seen the illicit brewing resurface.Chania called on Governor Ferdinand Waititu to set up a team that will monitor and crackdown on people who are re-introducing the illicit brews.

On Saturday, Kiambu County commander Adiel Nyange said that individuals and locals re-introducing the brews will be dealt with accordingly.

Nyange said that police officers in partnership with local chiefs will be conducting g raids in areas suspected to be brewing and selling illicit brews.

The Kiambu county commander  called on resident to support the police in identify people selling the brews for legal action to be taken.

“Our plea is to the members of the public to work with us in order to completely fight illicit brew menace that could be resurfacing,” he said.

In 2015, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a nationwide crackdown on illicit brew dens that saw millions of litres of brew destroyed and suspects arrested.

According to statistics   from NACADA Kiambu is among counties with high cases of illicit brews and second generation alcoholic drinks.
