The NGO, Hope Foundation for African Women director Teresia Gitau urged parents across Nyamira County to shun the outlawed practice which put the health of the girls at risk.

"FGM remains illegal and punishable by law. Parents should avoid forcing girls to undergo FGM because in the process diseases such as HIV/AIDs may be transmitted from one girl to another," said Gitau.

She urged local government administrator not to allow pareents in deep villages to conduct the practice on girls.

"Chiefs are the government watchdogs. I am appealing to the chiefs to stop taking bribes from parents so that to allow them conduct FGM on girls," she noted.

Gitau urged girls to report to police in case their parents will force them to undergo the outlawed process.

"Young girls who may be forced to undergo FGM are advised to run to police stations and chiefs' offices to report their parents for a legal action to be taken to serve as an example to the rest of the parents," she noted.
