Days of political confrontation and violent demonstrations in the streets may resume in a week’s time if the government does not pay off the current IEBC commissioners to pave way for their replacements, the opposition has warned.
A section of CORD leaders accuse President Kenyatta and his government of orchestrating a delay of electoral reforms by not releasing money meant to compensate the current 9 IEBC commissioners.
Speaking during a fundraiser in Likoni, Mombasa county on Saturday, Siaya Senator James Orengo warned that the opposition will resume mass action in a week’s time if the government does not release the money.
"If by next week Uhuru will not have ordered the treasury to release the money to pay the commissioners, we will take our demonstrations to the streets," he warned.
Also speaking at a different venue in Mombasa, Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale said the President should be blamed for the delay in IEBC reforms and warned that the Opposition will take action.
“We are giving President Kenyatta notice that if the IEBC commissioners are not paid their packages within one week, then we will take action,” the Kakamega Senator was quoted by The Standard.
A month ago, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich told the parliamentary select committee on electoral reforms that the Government will use cash from the Contingency Fund to pay off the commissioners.
"We have contingency funds for such unforeseen expenditure if it does occur," said CS Rotich.
