The battle for electoral reforms took a new twist on Monday after Kenya African National Union (Kanu) Secretary General Nick Salat joined Cord in calling for the disbandment of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Mr Salat, along time member of the independence party joined Coalition for Reforms and Democracy leaders Raila Odinga (ODM), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) and Moses Wetangula (Ford Kenya) in agitating for the dissolution of the electoral body.
It is however, not clear whether he participated in Monday's demonstration as a representative of Kanu or on his individual capacity.
Cord is leading demonstrations across the country in pushing IEBC Chairman Isaack Hassan and his commissioners to leave office before the August 2017 general election are held.
Salat became the second member of a party that is not affiliated to Cord to join protests which started three weeks ago after Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale took part in the demonstrations held on April 25.
Khalwale is a member of the Amani coalition and was elected on a United Democratic Front ticket.
Salat during the Monday demonstration accompanied the Cord Co-Principals to IEBC head office at Anniversary Towers, Nairobi where they addressed opposition supporters before they were teargassed and dispersed by heavily armed police officers.
Kanu is still affiliated to the ruling Jubilee coalition.
The party has however, of recent shown dissatisfaction with working with the Uhuru Kenyatta-led coalition.
Salat addressed the opposition supporters with calls that Kenyans push for the disbandment of the IEBC before 2017.
He is a close associate to Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto who last month at a function in Kajiado together with Mr Odinga called for the dissolution of the IEBC.
He led Kanu leaders in defying a proposal by Jubilee to jointly field one candidate during the Kericho County Senatorial by-election in which Kanu candidate Paul Sang lost.
