A section of business owners in Kiambu town have called for an end to the weekly protests that are being called by opposition leaders saying that continued protests are a recipe for economic downfall for the country.

The business owners say that the protest by opposition leaders is creating instability in the business sector.

Speaking to this writer on Wednesday, Kiambu Association of Small Business Owners Thomas Muiruri said that the anti-IEBC protests will kill the economy.

“We are calling on the government and opposition leaders to give dialogue a chance and address issues surrounding the IEBC so that business environment can be created,” he said.

Mr Muiruri said that investors are likely to stay off some parts of the country as a result of the anti-IEBC protests.

He observed that already some business owners are counting losses as a result of the chaotic protests.

“Business only thrives in a peaceful environment and that is why we want the government and opposition leaders to create peace and not chaos,” he said.

Susan Muchina, an economist in Kiambu said that the country is heading the wrong way if cases of violence and impunity will be entertained.

“From what Kenya suffered in 2007/2008 it will be important for our leaders both in government and opposition to ensure peaceful environment for Kenyans and their businesses,” he said.

On Monday during property worth millions of shillings was destroyed in Kisumu during the Cord anti-IEBC demonstrations.

The demonstrators allegedly destroyed several private properties a move that has seen some investors threaten to quit the county.

On Monday, Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Caroline Kariuki said that the economy had lost over Sh 80 Million as a result of the anti-IEBC protests.

She warned that the business sector will suffer more if the anti-IEBC protests by opposition leaders are not put to an end.
