Laikipia University's deputy vice-chancellor, Prof. Isaac Kosgei, is tipped to take over from the current VC Prof. Laban Ayiro who has been heading the institution since September 2016 in an acting capacity.

This is based on interview results in which Kosgei emerged the top amid allegations of tribalism on the part of the interviewers.

The move which is expected to end the prolonged search for a VC of the Eldoret-based University is, however, causing anxiety in the institution and has brought up mixed reactions among the students with a majority having a view of retaining the current VC.

On Saturday, Moi University social media was awash with reactions following the tip on the expected announcement that appeared in a local daily newspaper.

While some students supported the expected change, majority complained about the move terming it unfair to the current VC.

"The political eddies are turbulent on Ayiro while they streamlined on Kosgei's side," posted a student in a WhatsApp group called Moi University Finalists.

"Imagine after all Ayiro's hard work...life is not and will never be fair," lamented another student in another Moi university students' group.

"Ayiro is going nowhere. We shall not allow..." posted another.

Others poured their views and frustrations on Twitter under the hashtag #IStandWithAyiroIStandWithAyiro

The few who expressed support for Prof. Kosgei's expected appointment expressed lack of concern over who heads the institution.

"How can you judge someone on something he has not done? Let Kosgei be given a chance," posted a student.

"All I want is to graduate. I don't care under which VC whether Ayiro or Kosgei," posted another."Ayiro doesn't pay our rent. Let him go. We should not pluralise our pros and cons," another student posted. The topic is still hotly under discussion in the institution and much is expected to be seen in coming days.
