Street urchins in Thika town have increased in huge numbers over the past few years, causing anxiety amongst residents. On September 13, 2012, Thika Live through a post titled "Niaje Auntie Smart" highlighted the issue of street children in the town. The street urchins note that their situation continues to worsen: neglect, hunger, fever from cold weather at night, poor dressing and even sexual harassment are among the challenges they face. "Orphans are joining us, alcohol and drug addicts remain to be urchins plus this issue of joblessness that triggers poverty," Ann Wawira, a mother of three on the street explains. Statistics show that every corner of Thika town has more than three street families, as compared to four years ago when street families used to survive only around the main stage. The situation is worsened by the fact that most street kids are no longer small boys and girls but grown up teenagers. “The current scenario in Thika town is unpleasant and one that needs a quick response. The effect of their invasion into any town is always a security threat,” a resident complained. Residents now want the concerned authorities in the government to intervene and help in the rehabilitation of the street families and if possible, provide for them an alternative source of living.
