An Administration Police officer is nursing injuries after he was attacked by a notorious bhang peddler during a swoop at Kenyerere, Sameta sub-county.
According to Kisii County Police Commander Ms Agnes Mudambi, the officer had accompanied his colleagues from Kenyerere AP post on a raid at the home of man suspected to be a bhang peddler.
“The officer was in the company of an AP team that had raided the home of a notorious bhang peddler. On knocking the door of his house, he surprised the squad by suddenly assaulting the officer using a club and knocking him down before fleeing the scene,” Ms Mudambi told the Nation.
The dawn incident left the officer sprawled with an injury above the eye, sprawled on the ground in front of the suspect’s house.
Police officers took off in pursuit of the suspect but could not catch up with him as he fled from the area on foot.
The police boss however said the suspect was seen boarding a motorbike near the shopping centre by witnesses.
“We suspect that it was this motorbike he boarded at the shopping centre that enabled him to escape the police dragnet,” said Ms Mudambi.
Ms Mudambi said her officers who remained at the scene carried out a search of the house where they found a home made gun and other implements commonly used in burglaries.
“Other officers then entered the suspect’s house and upon searching it discovered a homemade gun and other housebreaking implements commonly used in acts of burglary like metal bars, wire cutters, hammers and several large torches,” said Ms Mudambi.
She said the officer sustained an injury above his left eye during the dawn incident.
He was taken to Lenmeck Hospital where he was referred to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital.
“We took him to KTRH where an eye specialist declared him out of danger. He has been discharged in stable condition,” said the police boss.
She said the police had launched a manhunt for the suspect who is still at large.
"We are searching for the suspect are confident of nabbing him soon," said Ms Mudambi.
