Two officers are in police custody after being arrested on Sunday morning for allegedly trafficking illegal firearms from Isiolo to Nairobi.
The officers identified as Cyrus Nyamu and Joseph Lewa, of the Rapid Deployment Unit in Embakasi, were nabbed at a roadblock along the Southern Bypass.
Their government car, registration GKB 362 J, had a sack of charcoal in which there were AK 47 rifles with no bullets.
The arrest following an alert from the public.
They were taken to Central police station are expected in court on Monday.
Nairobi Central police commander Robinson Thuku said preliminary investigations indicate the suspects may not have know there were guns in the sack.
"It seems someone planted the weapons without their knowledge," he said.
"Officers have already left for Isiolo for investigations. We will ask the court to hold them further for us to conclude our investigations."
