Sonko caused a stir during the burial of Dolamu Oduwole, husband to former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti when he claimed he was 'acting president' following the absence of President Uhuru Kenyatta who is in Togo attending the African Union Extraordinary Summit on Maritime Security and Safety and Development in Africa.

He also said Deputy William Ruto was away in France. "Rais Uhuru is in Togo, Deputy President William Ruto is in France. I am number three in command politically influence-wise and socially… I am now the acting president of the republic of Kenya," Sonko said during the event.

But speaking to this reporter on Saturday, the former political prisoner said by Sonko imposing himself as the president against the Constitution was a capital offence and an abuse on the presidency.

“Senator Mbuvi should not have made such remarks. The presidency is not vacant despite the absence of the two. The presidency should be respected in line with the Constitution and those who know the pecking order understand well,” he said.

“If fact, should he have made the remarks in 80s and 90s, we should be talking of Kamiti. And I want to assure you that it was treason and he owes Kenyans an apology or gets charged with treason. We must learn to respect the presidency,” he said.

The Nairobi Senator is a close confidant of President Uhuru and is poised to run for the gubernatorial seat against the incumbent Governor Evans Kidero in the 2017 race.
