Matiba died on April 15, a death Koigi claims can be directly linked to his detention and torture under Moi's Nyayo era over his push for multiparty democracy in the 1990s.

Speaking on JKL Wednesday, the former Subukia Member of Parliament who was also a political detention victim said Moi's long life is possibly an opportunity granted to him to apologize on behalf of his fallen regime.

"President Moi should consider apologizing on behalf of his regime over Matiba's death and to all the other who suffered under his rule. This is possibly reason why he still stands strong and should use it well and clear the standing grudges," he said.

"Apologizing will not lower his respect among Kenyans but will instead make him a hero and will be a good impression to younger Kenyans," he added.
