Madaraka market traders have been asked to join hands and clean the market that has continued to be ravaged by garbage since the county government withdrew its garbage collection services late last year following a disagreement with the traders.

Speaking to the traders on Thursday at the market aspiring candidate for Kamenu Ward seat Sam Chege said that the traders need to organize a clean up exercise and he will in turn help mobilize the community around to help them during the exercise.

"As traders you need to set aside part of your time and call for an entire clean up of the market because it is not in an attractive condition. In doing so we can have residents join us through a prior mobilisation and show our detractors that we can do it," said Chege.

Chege, however, expressed optimism that a solution will be found soon through the ongoing case at the High Court and the mess the traders have found themselves in sorted once and for all.

"We are hopeful that the high court decision will be in your favour and all these challenges shall come to an end. However, we have to do something in the meantime about the garbage so as to keep customers coming," he said.

He noted that Kang'ooki dumpsite was just in the vicinity and therefore it won't cost them much to transport the fast-piling garbage.
