In the last one year, Lama Hardware and Electrical has been training the youth in Kibera on welding to enable them secure employment.

They introduced the apprenticeship at a low fee to equip the youth who drop out of school and other students who cannot afford college or secondary school fees, with skills in welding for future self-employment.

"Three thousand shillings is enough for one to get welding skills at Lama Hardware especially to male youths who drop school due to unavoidable circumstances.

The course entails dedication and hard work as it takes three to six months depending on the trainees capability to learn the skills," says Jared Ohuru, Lama hardware owner in an interview on Tuesday.

He has urged youth in the Kibera slums to join different vocational training centres to acquire skills in carpentry, masonry, dress making, mechanics that open doors for them to create their own jobs.

"The government should ensure equal distribution of county bursary fund and constituency development funds to help Kibera youth who are willing to join vocational training but are unable to raise training fees," he added.
