In September 2000, Kisii senator Sam Ongeri was admitted in Nairobi hospital after he was assaulted by angry mourners.
This is after a burial ceremony he had attended turned political leading to violence which saw several people being injured.
The incident happened in South Mugirango during the burial of MP Enock Magara after he (Ongeri) failed to leave the funeral as demanded by students who were part of the mourners claiming that anyone had the right to mourn regardless of their political grounds.
The mourner also demanded Chris Obure and Bomachoge ex-MP Zephania Nyang'wara to leave the funeral which they listened to and left.
According to Ongeri, the chaos was planned by Former Finance Minister Simeon Nyachae as a way to kill his political career.
However, Nyanchae claimed that the senator had insulted the mourners in Ekegusii which provoked them.
“…he reprimanded them in Ekegusii mbachinga kiaba bakonyogerera? (who are these stupid people making noise at me?)", said Nyanchae.
Speaking at his hospital bed, Ongeri confirmed that he was injured in the head as he had a deep cut and a scratch on his chin.
