President Uhuru Kenyatta once called Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho, Sultan, the governor said.
During campaigns before the August 8, 2017, general elections, the two politicians were at loggerheads, attacking each other in public events.
During one of the campaigns, the ODM governor who was later re-elected slammed Kenyatta, saying he recognised him as Sultan, a nickname that he was branded as he sought re-election.
Before that, several Jubilee politicians criticised Joho, wondering why he would call himself a Sultan.
"I am Hassan Ali Joho but Uhuru identifies me with another name... yesterday he called me (during a campaign rally). When I'm asked what's my name, I say I am Hassan Ali Joho. But he (Uhuru) has my other name. If that name angers you, then have it," Joho said as hundreds of supporters shouted "Sultan!".
Uhuru was complaining about the governor's nickname before Junet Mohammed, Suna East MP responded to Kenyatta, explaining as to why Joho is a Sultan to Muslims just like President Uhuru Kenyatta is a ‘Muthamaki’ when in the Central region.
Armed GSU officers blocked Mr. Joho from attending a function presided over by the president at Mtongwe Kenyatta claiming that the governor had no business in accompanying him to functions.
“I saw him complaining this morning that Joho is a Sultan but what he should know is that us Muslims call somebody who is a serious leader a Sultan just like they call Uhuru Muthamaki when in Nyeri,” said Mohammed.
”When you are in Coast you must call him a Sultan and that is not negotiable. He should accept that and move on because it is a reality," added Junet
