You can look at lying in it's legality and ethically. It is illegal to tell a lie in court under oath. On the other hand, giving your neighbor false information is unethical and not necessarily illegal. People are driven to lie for different reasons. Some feel that lying for the right reasons is not unethical. For instance, lying about the whereabouts of a friend to protect them from an abusive partner might be considered okay. The motive is to keep your friend from harm. What about people who are always lying even when they're not on the spot? It's a habit that becomes one's character. If you feel the need to always lie, you might be addicted to lying. Especially if the habit cuts across petty matters that often hold no weight. It might include what you ate, where you are, what time you went to bed, and such simple matters. Socially, people tend to learn to cope with pathological liars by expecting that what they say is a lie. This habit costs your reputation but can be broken with will, time and effort.
